An interesting and educational discussion with the brilliant Silkie Carlo, the head of Big Brother Watch here in the UK. I thought I would be at a disadvantage in the debate since I’d never listened to Joe Rogan, I didn’t know who Post Malone was and hadn’t watched Nigel Farage on GBNews. But it worked out OK.

The heart of the discussion was around privacy. It’s a complicated issue (explored in detail, for example, here), but I can summarise my position thus: total surveillance is bad, total anonymity is bad, privacy is good but it should be civil society that sets the dial.
